Each year the top 50 Benatrade Angus cows are artificially inseminated to a proven AI sire as recommended by Lindsay Jones. In 2017, 100+ cows and heifers will be inseminated. Typically, sires are selected from international breeding operations that winter outdoors in conditions that are similar, if not harsher than the southern parts of New Zealand. The pedigree of the sire is checked to ensure good calving history of the dam and grand-dams.

At Benatrade Angus, progeny from AI animals combine high genetic merit and environmental robustness to create a sire with the ultimate balance. Fewer recorded progeny from the use of home-bred sires delays the improvement of EBV traits and their accuracy but is overcome by recording weights and scanning data.
